Dream Disc '24

This December, Orc Face Games are delighted to team up with Psyop Studios and the wider Dreamcast community to run a new kind of game jam. Introducing Dream Disc '24!

What is it?

During Friday Dec 20th – Friday Jan 3rd, independent Dreamcast developers of every creed will get together on itch.io and the Simulant Discord to collaborate, build, tinker, and show off their projects. At the end, the public will vote for their favourites while a small panel of judges review the submissions and do the same. Winners will receive prizes including a modest cash sum, a social media feature, and last but not least, a place on the physical Dream Disc '24 CD-ROM! Once complete, the disc will be sold worldwide at the cost of shipping right here on the Orc Face Games website.

We aim to run a fun event that celebrates this passionate community and encourage the creation of brand new games while also showcasing some of the very impressive longer term projects currently in development. If that sounds like something you'd be interested in, come visit the Simulant Discord Server and say hi!

The Prizes!

Dream Disc '24 CD-ROM

Top 10 submissions chosen by the panel judges are considered for inclusion on the physical CD-ROM. We need at least 10 submissions total for this to be viable. Submissions with total contents taking up over 70MB cannot be included due to space constraints. If CDDA is used, the submission must be able to read its first track number from a file. We understand that some developers may not want to have their work added to the disc. If you wish to opt out, please specify this when submitting your project.

Cash Money

Top 3 submissions by the panel judges are awarded cash prizes! We started the prize pool with our own donation but others have since contributed. If anyone adds to the prize pool, this page will be updated to reflect this.

1st Place: $304.72

2nd Place: $228.54

3rd Place: $152.36

If you would like to add to the prize pool, head over to our Dream Disc '24 Prize Pool donation page. Note that the current amounts shown on this page have been entered manually and will not auto-update after your donation has been received.

Community Favourites

Top 10 submissions chosen by public vote earn the title of "Community Favourites" and are promoted on the Orc Face Games social media and website. They will also be played/used on-stream by the team at Orc Face!

FAQ

What sort of thing can I submit?

Games and software utilities that run on the SEGA Dreamcast or the VMU, tools/apps that run on other platforms but are directly tied to Dreamcast gaming or development, or even Dreamcast-related hardware projects (see below).

Are there any content restrictions?

You cannot submit anything including copyrighted material that you don't have the rights to use (ie. fangames, parodies, assets without permission/license). This includes the use of official SEGA tools or software - only unofficial technologies are permitted. Use of patented technologies such as audio/video codecs is prohibited. Anything with adult/NSFW content is not permitted. No content (graphics, code, audio, video or otherwise) generated using AI is permitted unless you have been granted the right to use the training data by the IP holders.

Do you have any recommended tools?

Yes! For beginners we would recommend Raylib4DC or AntiRuins. For more advanced users, Simulant Game Engine or directly using KallistiOS are good choices.

Where does voting take place?

On the Simulant discord server (see link above).

When can I start? Can I submit a project I've already started?

Yes! While the jam is running during a specific time period, we accept submissions from any time.

I would like to submit a hardware project. How does that work?

Please join the Simulant Discord server. Hardware submissions will be reviewed and judged separately in a side-competition by the same panel of judges, assuming there are enough hardware submissions.

How many people per team?

There are no official limits on team size, but it's best to keep teams small so as to not hit management or communication issues.

Please let us know if you have any other questions and we'll add the answers to this page. Happy jamming!
